PEAT | Peninsula Environmental Action Together

PEAT formed in summer 2019 as GCAN after the SLDC Climate Conversations when people who attended the meeting expressed an interest in continuing the conversation afterwards. We changed our name to PEAT in 2020 to be clearer about our desire to connect peninsula-wide, covering the 9 parish areas from Cartmel Fell to Allithwaite & Cartmel and Haverthwaite to Witherslack, Meathop & Ulpha.

Our Hopes & Dreams
We want to learn together. We will encourage knowledge holders to share what they know about climate change, biodiversity loss and the wider issues we are all facing. We want to encourage everyone to engage in this important subject - we can do so much more when we all work together. We want to ensure what we do is accessible to everyone, to share ideas for making our future world a better place; sustainable by simple actions that we can all do, that has fun at its heart.

Why Peat?
This name connects us to the subject of climate change really well - our peninsula has peat in abundance at its borderlands, raised fell tops and sea bound edges. Peat is the largest carbon store we have on this world and we need to protect it and care for it well. Peatlands, a type of wetland, occur in almost every country on the globe. They store twice as much carbon as all the world’s forests and more carbon than all other vegetation types in the world combined. The carbon stored in UK peatlands is equivalent to 8 years of total UK carbon emissions. In the Lake District peatlands there is 22.9 million tonnes of carbon stored - equivalent to 84 million tonnes of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. When we read all this we knew our new name made perfect sense!

Join PEAT
Our membership is growing and we'd love you to join us. It costs just £5 a year.

PEAT currently meets on the last Tuesday of each month at 7pm. This alternates between meeting live at Grange Methodist Hall and meeting online.  All details of meetings are sent out to members via the newsletter and also appear in our PEAT column in Grange Now on the Clubs and Societies page. Once you've joined please add to your email address list too so we don't slip into spam: peatmessages@gmail.com

Our next meetings are listed here and we look forward to meeting you.
