SEEDLINGS: Knit Me

So, here’s a strange thing that makes us smile ...

We've come across something about knitting slug guards from jute - we cannot recall where it’s come from, but it’s been a thing, apparently.

So, we thought, let’s have a go.

We've tried knitting (and crocheting) a few shapes now - of course we won't get to try them until the seeds grow and the slugs starting their merry munching so for now we're just having a go. The jute is rough and scratchy and the knit must make it hard to venture over - maybe it will work, maybe it won’t, but we think it’s worth a try. It’s a trial and error thing ... but maybe we could become known as the peninsula of home knitting slug guard makers!

Whether you think it’s just bonkers or it makes you smile, if you live anywhere between the parish of Cartmel Fell down to Humphrey Head, and Haverthwaite to Ulpha and you have knitting needles (we have a few too) and want some jute to try it out, just register on the link to take part: https://tinyurl.com/PEATseedlings

WHAT YOU NEED:
Jute 3-ply, 2mm (we have some to share)
4.5mm knitting needles
a wonderful smile

INSTRUCTIONS
Cast on 20 stitches
Knit 20 rows
Knit halfway (10 stitches)
Introduce a second supply of jute and knit the last 10 stitches
Turn and repeat 10, then drop the thread
Pick up the first thread and knit the next row and back
Repeat until you have completed 20 rows on each section from the split
Cast off both sections

OR ...
what about a longer thinner scarf type knit that could wrap round the base of a plant - say cast on 8/10 stitches, knit about 15-20cm, cast off - might that work?

HOW DID THEY GO?
Let us know!
