GREENING CAMPAIGN: Challenges

We are asking everyone who lives or works in the Cartmel Peninsula to pledge to do 5 easy energy-saving (and money saving) challenges for one year, which will help the whole area be more sustainable.  The following challenges were chosen by the community as being the most suitable for our area and people can choose any out of these:

  • Halve food waste by planning menus and using leftovers
  • Replace lightbulbs with LEDs
  • Switch off lights when leaving a room
  • Turn the heating thermostat down by 1 degree C
  • Shower for 1 minute less (4 people)
  • Wash up using a bowl instead of under a running tap
  • Line or rack-dry washing
  • Boil only the amount of water needed
To make everyone aware of the challenges, have some fun seeing how you can get your scarecrow to demonstrate them!

If you are already doing most of these things, why not try some different energy-saving actions to do? Here are some ideas:
  • Buy locally-produced food as much as possible
  • Insulate your house as much as you can
  • Use a rainwater butt instead of a hose on your garden (tap water uses a lot of energy!)
  • Switch off standbys
  • Fly less often
  • Buy pre-loved things rather than new whenever possible
